Coursework: Summer Project 2023

Summer project tasks

Complete the following tasks on a blogpost on your Media blog called 'Summer Project: coursework planning':

1) Research: Fantasy TV drama extracts

Watch the following fantasy TV drama clips and write an NCIS analysis of each one.

His Dark Materials

Narrative and genre:  What is the story here? How is the narrative communicated to the audience? How does this fit the fantasy genre?

The story of fantasy is to show that the character's beliefs were wrong and they were instead following something far more greater

Technical codes: What camera shots do you notice and what do they communicate to the audience? How is sound used to create atmosphere? What aspects of mise-en-scene (CLAMPS) help to communicate meaning to the audience?

The lighting is dark to set the mood for the atmosphere of Mrs coulter and Asriel as the tension rises throughout the clip.

Representations: What representations can you find in this clip - does it reinforce or subvert stereotypes? How?

This clearly reinforces stereotypes because Mrs Coulter is portrayed as a dominant powerful woman who has control over the magisterium. As you can see in this scene this power has now been given over to Asriel,a man.Miss Coulter looks weak and vulnerable.

Charmed

Narrative and genre: What is the story here? How is the narrative communicated to the audience? How does this fit the fantasy genre?
The Clips main story is about one of the main character prue's death

Technical codes: What camera shots do you notice and what do they communicate to the audience? How is sound used to create atmosphere? What aspects of mise-en-scene (CLAMPS) help to communicate meaning to the audience?

The scene is set in a family home which ends up getting wrecked
They added special effects and haunting magical elements

Representations: What representations can you find in this clip - does it reinforce or subvert stereotypes? How?

This subverts stereotypes as you can see prue was brave and strong as she stood her ground before getting killed

2) TV drama planning

Plan out the title and narrative for your new, original fantasy TV drama so you know how your extract will fit into the overall series.

Complete this TV drama pitch document with your NEW original idea for a fantasy TV drama aimed at a family audience. Copy and paste the questions from the Google doc into your blog.

TV Drama Pitch – fantasy genre

Our coursework task involves coming up with our own idea for an original television drama that you have created. This must follow the conventions of the fantasy genre and show that you have thought about how to meet the brief and aim your production at the family target audience.

Fill in the following details:

Title:

Logline – one sentence that sums up the plot of your TV drama and hooks people in (25 words or fewer):magical

Other successful TV dramas are similar to yours:the vampire diaries

Narrative – what is the main storyline in your TV drama:

A girl who gets followed after a day at tuition

Genre – how will your TV drama fit the fantasy genre?

There will be some spells and other supernatural ideas

Narrative disruption – what will happen in your scene to develop the narrative? What will the audience learn about the characters or story?

The girl will realise shes being followed

Information about the two locations/settings that you are using and why you have chosen them:

A cemetery and an alleyway.I chose this as it sets the scene for my idea

Information about the main character e.g character type (hero/heroine) their desires, the conflicts they encounter etc.:

Costume/props that you require for filming:

 fake blood

long jacket

mask

schoolbag

How you are aiming your product at the specified family target audience:

By adding a little boy to be a character

3) Statement of Intent

On the same Summer Project blogpost, write the rough first draft of your genuine 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute sequence you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your fantasy TV drama extract and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

Guidance is provided by AQA in their NEA Student Booklet but we strongly recommend you also look at our Statement of Intent suggested content document too.

I plan to make a 60 second fantasy TV drama scene called 'Eternal Thirst'.My fantasy drama consists of an encounter between a 14 year old girl coming back from tuition on a Saturday morning with a Bloodthirsty hooded man following her.You will see how she faces her challenge and if she makes a friends to help her along the way

Plan

The scene is set in an secluded alleyway and past a cemetery.

It will start of as a harmless walk.

The girl begins to hum along with the voice inside her headphones whilst attaching a plaster to the blood on her finger.

This then leads to the hooded man slowly getting up from a slouching position from the gates of the cemetery.

He starts to follow her.

He hides between poles and trees so she cant see him.

She hears some grunts and growls and starts to walk briskly, she then begins running to an alleyway nearby her house thinking that she's safe.

The man appears out of nowhere and chases her which causes her to trip and injure herself on the spiky thorns.

She gets back up panting and scared for her life as she now sees that the man has now vanished and is nowhere to be seen.

Slowly the man creeps up behind her, grips her shoulders and bites her neck.

The screen goes black with a sound of a loud thud as she now wakes up in transition, growling in pain begging and crying to be set free.

She gets up limping to find a door on the alleyway

she sees that it leads to a house and starts banging on the door

A little boy appears with his football shocked to see what he's witnessed

the blood scares him as he screams mum only to remember that she's in the bathroom and couldn't possibly heal him.

He tells the girl to wait as he quickly came back with bandages and a big dusty book

He tells the girl that its his mum's spell book and that she wouldn't find out about it

he opens up the book to find the healing humans and animals page

He reads out a spell

a thunderstorm awakens as they fall asleep
